For many graduates, earning a degree marks the completion of an academic journey. For Selei Calvin Makgaba, graduating with a Bachelor of Laws (LLB) from the University of South Africa (UNISA) represents far more than academic achievement—it is the fulfilment of a lifelong dream, years in the making, fuelled by perseverance, discipline, faith, and an unwavering commitment to justice.

Born and raised in the rural village of Madiga within the Polokwane Local Municipality in Limpopo Province, Makgaba's upbringing instilled in him the values of humility, hard work, resilience, and discipline. Growing up in a community faced with various social and legal challenges sparked his interest in justice and inspired his desire to one day contribute meaningfully to society through the legal profession.

The Calling into law

His passion for law began during his school years, where he studied Mercantile Law from Grade 10 through Grade 12. Although his academic path initially led him in a different direction, completing a Bachelor of Arts in Communication Science and a Postgraduate Diploma in Marketing Management, the dream of becoming a lawyer never faded. The decision to pursue an LLB was therefore not simply a career move, but the realisation of a calling he had carried for many years.

"I approached my studies knowing that legal education requires discipline, intellectual rigour and a strong sense of ethical responsibility," he says. "Excellence became my standard because I understood that one day I would be entrusted with protecting people's rights and upholding the rule of law."

Like many mature students, Makgaba faced significant challenges throughout his academic journey. Balancing full-time employment, family responsibilities, practical legal training and demanding coursework required exceptional time management and personal sacrifice. Distance learning further heightened the need for discipline and consistency.

Despite periods of exhaustion and self-doubt, he remained focused on his long-term objective. Through careful planning, unwavering faith, and the support of his family, he persevered and successfully completed his qualification.

"My wife and three children played a significant role in this journey," he reflects. "Their patience, encouragement and belief in me provided the strength I needed during the most demanding periods of my studies."

Makgaba credits much of his success to the support and guidance he received from mentors, lecturers, academic staff, supervisors and professionals who helped shape both his academic and professional development. Their encouragement and example inspired him to remain committed to his goals despite the challenges he encountered along the way.

Constitutional duty to advance justice and uphold rule of Law

His legal education has profoundly influenced his understanding of constitutional democracy and the role of the legal profession in South Africa. Through his studies, he gained a deeper appreciation for the Constitution as the foundation of human dignity, equality, freedom, accountability, and the rule of law.

"The LLB has reinforced my belief that every legal practitioner has a constitutional duty to advance justice and uphold the rule of law," he says.

Serving the people

Professionally, Makgaba brings a wealth of experience to the legal field. He previously served as a Communication Researcher at the Limpopo Department of Co-operative Governance, Human Settlements and Traditional Affairs (CoGHSTA), where he was responsible for communication research, media analysis, governance support, stakeholder engagement and strategic communication.

He is currently seconded from CoGHSTA to the Department of Justice and Constitutional Development, where he is serving his articles of clerkship at the Office of the State Attorney in Polokwane. This practical legal training has allowed him to apply legal theory in real-world settings through legal research, drafting, litigation support and advisory work, while strengthening his understanding of how law serves the public interest and promotes good governance.

Graduation, however, is not the final destination.

Committed to lifelong learning and professional growth, Makgaba is already pursuing a Master of Laws (LLM) in Property Law at UNISA. His interest in the field stems from its importance in constitutional transformation, land reform, property rights, governance and socio-economic development in South Africa.

Reflecting on his achievement, Makgaba describes graduating with an LLB as both a personal triumph and a professional responsibility.

Childhood dream

"Personally, graduating with an LLB represents the fulfilment of a childhood dream," he says. "Professionally, it signifies the beginning of a greater responsibility. The degree is not merely an academic qualification but a commitment to ethical leadership, professional excellence, constitutional values and service to society."

His advice to current and prospective law students is simple yet powerful:

"Approach your studies with discipline, integrity and intellectual curiosity. Do not study merely to pass examinations; study to understand the law and its role in transforming society. Remain patient and persistent because success in law is built through consistency and dedication."

Makgaba believes the legal profession plays a critical role in advancing social justice by protecting constitutional rights, improving access to justice, safeguarding vulnerable communities and promoting accountability across both the public and private sectors. He views legal practitioners as vital custodians of South Africa's constitutional democracy.

Today, as he continues serving his articles of clerkship while pursuing postgraduate studies, Makgaba remains committed to justice, public service and professional excellence. His journey from a small rural village in Limpopo to becoming an LLB graduate and aspiring legal specialist serves as a powerful reminder that circumstances do not define destiny.

His story stands as an inspiration to young people across South Africa, particularly those from rural communities, proving that through determination, faith, education and perseverance, even the most ambitious dreams can become reality.
