Dr Vanessa Mathope

The Department of Information Science extends its heartfelt congratulations to Dr Vanessa Mathope on her appointment to the University of Johannesburg (UJ) Archives and Special Collections Advisory Board.

Mathope, a lecturer in the Department of Information Science, is a published author and an ardent advocate for archives and records management. Her research interests include records management, artificial intelligence (AI) and archival practice. Her appointment, effective from 1 April 2026, marks a significant milestone in her academic and professional journey.

Mathope will provide strategic guidance to support the preservation, development and promotion of UJ’s archival resources. She will participate in biannual board meetings, advise on archival standards and best practices, and contribute to shaping policies related to records preservation, access and collections management. In addition, she will play an instrumental role in advancing outreach initiatives, strengthening partnerships, supporting advocacy and fundraising efforts, where appropriate, and championing the mission and objectives of the UJ Archives.

In the Department of Information Science, Mathope currently teaches three modules: Appraisal and Disposal of Records, Archival Programming and Advocacy, and Archival Principles and Practices. She noted that the Archival Programming and Advocacy module aligns closely with her new appointment, as its focus on advocacy, outreach and the strategic positioning of archival work directly complements her responsibilities in strengthening UJ’s archival presence and impact.

Encouraging fellow practitioners in the field of archives and records management, Mathope echoed the words of media leader Oprah Winfrey: "Don’t worry about being successful. Work toward being significant, and the success will naturally follow."

Mathope added that she aims to make an impact during her term as a board member and will ensure her advice is implemented.

The Chair of the Department of Information Science, Dr Makutla Mojapelo, expressed his pride in Mathope’s achievement and wished her every success in her new role. He is confident that she will continue to make the department proud. "This well-deserved recognition speaks volumes about Dr Mathope’s outstanding contributions to the profession and unwavering advocacy for the advancement of archives and records management services, not only in South Africa but also on the continent. We are confident that her expertise and passion will make a significant contribution by providing the strategic guidance, professional advice and support in matters relating to archival development, policies, collection management and long-term planning."
