The largest provider of business education in Africa and one of the largest in the world
Talana Lebelo
Talana Lebelo, who is currently seconded as an Alumni Relations Specialist at the Unisa Graduate School of Business Leadership (SBL), recently marked a significant milestone in her academic and professional journey by graduating with a Bachelor of Commerce Honours degree in Marketing Management at the University of South Africa's Muckleneuk Campus.
Her achievement marks the culmination of a journey that spans more than two decades at Unisa. Lebelo's association with the institution began in 2005 when she joined the Student Assessment Administration Assignment Division as a temporary student worker. In 2010, she secured a permanent position as a Programme Coordinator at the SBL.
Over the years, her career has taken her across various university divisions through Unisa's Talent Management Programme. She returned to Student Assessment Administration in 2016 before moving to Institutional Advancement, Electronic and Web Communication in 2023. In August 2025, she was placed in the College of Economic and Management Sciences (CEMS) Marketing Office.
Despite her professional growth, Lebelo's academic journey was not without setbacks. Following the Covid-19 pandemic, she enrolled for further studies but was forced to put her academic aspirations on hold due to personal challenges.
"After Covid, I decided to study, but due to personal challenges, I had to pause," she recalls. "However, I decided to go back again to finish what I had started."
Her determination was deeply influenced by her family background and the values instilled in her from an early age.
"I come from a family that values education, as I believe it opens doors to unexpected opportunities. My confidence in the power of education is unwavering, and I am also inspired to follow in the footsteps of my late father, who took great pride in learning," she says.
Lebelo believes that her Marketing Management qualification has equipped her with skills that extend far beyond the classroom.
"It provided me with essential skills beyond marketing principles, including strategic thinking, problem-solving and effective communication. It enhanced my confidence, research abilities and relationship management, highlighting the importance of creating value through meaningful engagement," she explains.
Reflecting on her journey, Lebelo encourages colleagues and other working professionals who may be considering further studies not to lose sight of their goals.
"To achieve success, start by understanding and believing in yourself. Reflect on your strengths and values to set meaningful goals with confidence. Maintaining focus and discipline is essential as you face challenges along the way. By developing positive habits and staying committed, you can overcome obstacles and stay aligned with your objectives," she says.
Originally from the rural village of Grasvlei Ga-Lebelo in the Mogalakwena Local Municipality in Limpopo, Lebelo's story serves as a reminder that perseverance, discipline and a commitment to lifelong learning can turn delayed dreams into remarkable achievements.
