Purpose statement:
The primary purpose of this qualification is to provide a learning pathway enabling teachers who have completed a Bachelor of Education (BEd) degree or an appropriate first degree capped by an appropriate Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE), or a Pre-2009 Higher Diploma in Education, which will have focused on developing their subject content knowledge, to deepen their understanding of how to teach school mathematics more effectively. The qualification will therefore seek to: Provide students with a deeper understanding of technical and pedagogical content knowledge for the effective teaching of school mathematics in diverse contexts: Apply theories and action research in Mathematics Education relevant to school mathematics. Expose students to strategies that will enable students to teach mathematics in a variety of ways. Demonstrate competence to teach mathematics through problem solving. Develop the ability to integrate the various strands of mathematics into a coherent, deep conceptual understanding of mathematics as a discipline and its role in society. 
And Broaden teaching and learning horizons by using appropriate technology/Information and communications technology (ICT) effectively. 
Your admission to Unisa is dependent on you meeting the specific admission requirements for your chosen qualification.
 A  four-year  Bachelor  of  Education  degree  with  Mathematics/Mathematics  Education  completed  up  to  second  year  level,  
or  
A  general  first  degree  or  diploma,  plus  a  Postgraduate  Certificate  in  Education  with  Mathematics  completed  up  to  second  year  level,  
or
  a  general  first  degree  or  diploma  plus  a  former  Higher  Diploma  in  Education  (Postgraduate)  with  Mathematics  completed  up  to  second  year  level.  
or
A  former  cognate  Advanced  Certificate  in  Education  (Level  6  on  the  former  8-level  NQF)  
or  
a  former  cognate  Further  Diploma  in  Education  which  follows  a  former  professional  teaching  qualification,  
or  
a  former  cognate  four-year  Higher  Diploma  in  Education,  
or
a  new  cognate  Advanced  Certificate  (Level  6  on  the  current  10  level  NQF)  which  followed  a  former  Diploma  in  Education  (including  a  National  Professional  Diploma  in  Education)  may  also  be  presented  for  admission  in  an  Advanced  Diploma.
Applicants  who  would  like  to  apply  for  admission  through  recognition  of  prior  learning  (RPL)  must  be  at  least  23  years  old;  have  completed  Diploma  at  an  NQF  level  6;  and  have  at  least  five  years  of  relevant  teaching/  work-based  experience  in  Mathematics  Education  or  related  subject  fields,  as  well  as  evidence  of  basic  research  skills. Applicants  who  do  not  comply  with  the  above  requirements  should  consider  applying  for  a  lower-level  qualification  for  which  they  meet  the  statutory  and  additional  requirements.
