NQF Level: 6: GNE2601, GNE2602, GNE2603, GNE2604
NQF Level: 7: GNE3701, GNE3702, GNE3703, GNE3704

General Genetics A - GNE2601

Under Graduate Degree Semester module NQF level: 6 Credits: 12
Module presented in English
Pre-requisite: CHE1501 or CHE1502
Purpose: To enable students to gain insight into the principles and major concepts of genetics with an emphasis on Mendelian genetics, nucleic acid structure and properties, gene recombination and chromosome mapping.

General Genetics B - GNE2602

Under Graduate Degree Semester module NQF level: 6 Credits: 12
Module presented in English Module presented online
Co-requisite: GNE2601
Purpose: This module will provide participants with further knowledge in genetics. Students participating in this module will be able to demonstrate understanding of how changes in DNA can affect cellular functions and outline the principles of quantitative, population and evolutionary genetics. They will also be able to explain how genetics practices are useful in diagnosing disease and abnormalities.

Cytogenetics - GNE2603

Under Graduate Degree Semester module NQF level: 6 Credits: 12
Module presented in English
Co-requisite: GNE2602
Purpose: This module will provide students with information on the study of chromosomes and their role in the genetic continuity of life.

Genetics (Practical) II - GNE2604

Under Graduate Degree Year module NQF level: 6 Credits: 12
Module presented in English
Co-requisite: GNE2601 & GNE2602
Purpose: This module forms part of the BSc degree in in Life Sciences with Genetics and Zoology (Or botany, Microbiology, physiology or biochemistry) qualification streams. On completion of this module students will have been exposed to a range of laboratory equipment such as basic measurement devices to more advanced instruments such as thermocyclers and flow cytometers. They will personally be able to follow a laboratory protocol and analyse the data that is obtained from such a protocol. Students will also be able to describe laboratory techniques used in recombinant DNA experiments.

Advanced Molecular Genetics - GNE3701

Under Graduate Degree Semester module NQF level: 7 Credits: 12
Module presented in English
Co-requisite: GNE2601 & GNE2602
Purpose: This module will provide students with the information on genetic factors that contribute to complex genetic diseases in humans.

Advanced Genetics - GNE3702

Under Graduate Degree Semester module NQF level: 7 Credits: 12
Module presented in English
Co-requisite: GNE2601 & GNE2602
Purpose: This module will provide students with information on advanced aspects of gene expression and regulation.

Population Genetics - GNE3703

Under Graduate Degree Semester module NQF level: 7 Credits: 12
Module presented in English Module presented online
Co-requisite: GNE2601 & GNE2602
Purpose: This module will provide students with information on genetic variation within organisms and populations.

Genetics (Practical) - GNE3704

Under Graduate Degree Year module NQF level: 7 Credits: 12
Module presented in English
Co-requisite: GNE3701 & GNE3702
Purpose: This module will provide students with information on more advanced genetic research techniques.
