Human Rights, Values and Social Transformation - HRV1601

Under Graduate Degree Semester module NQF level: 6 Credits: 12
Module presented in English Module presented online
Purpose: The purpose of this module is to invite students to reflect on human rights ideas, values, and history from the perspective of African experiences. By critically engaging human rights values like dignity, freedom and equality and key human rights documents like the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, the African Charter of Human and People's Rights and the South African constitution's Bill of Rights, students will become more conscious of the ways in which human rights have shaped our current world order - including our own communities. At the heart of the module lies the challenging question, "are human rights the basis of social transformation or a form of Western neo-colonialism?".
