Unisa delegation and alumni at the recently launched Western Cape alumni chapter
In 2025, the University of South Africa's esteemed Graduate School of Business Leadership (SBL) proudly marks its 60th anniversary, a milestone that reflects six decades of academic excellence, leadership development and transformation in the field of business education.
As part of the commemorative activities, the SBL recognised the importance of maintaining long-standing relationships with its graduates and officially launched a local alumni chapter in Unisa’s Western Cape Region. This initiative aims to foster continued engagement, strengthen connections and build a supportive professional network for alumni in the region.
The launch was a celebration of the SBL's legacy and achievements, and marked the beginning of a renewed commitment to regional connection and collaboration.
Regional Director, Motale Nkgoang, welcomed the guests and highlighted the school’s achievement of securing accreditation from the Business Graduates Association (BGA). In her opening remarks, Prof Pumela Msweli, CEO and Executive Dean of the SBL, reflected on the school’s 60-year legacy and emphasised the power of alumni in shaping the next six decades.
SBL Alumni National Chairperson, Dr Tshepo Feela, spoke about the strategy endorsed and approved by the SBL executive. Feela remarked: "The strategy is to reconnect and reignite alumni, and to foster common participation and global inclusivity, not only for advancing careers and businesses, but also for sustainable and impactful participation in society. We aim to host several networking events to reconnect alumni with the SBL and to encourage involvement in the school’s activities, including teaching, fundraising and social impact programmes."
The gathering brought together former students who shared heartfelt reflections on their academic journeys, professional growth and the transformative impact of their time at the SBL. Their stories resonated deeply with all in attendance and underscored the strength and spirit of the SBL community.
The evening culminated in formally establishing the SBL Western Cape Alumni Chapter. Feela introduced and officially inducted Bishop Khaya Mayedwa as the chapter’s chairperson. Mayedwa affirmed his commitment to taking the chapter forward in the Western Cape and spoke passionately about how future interventions would build on the success of the past 60 years.
In his vote of thanks, Dr Levy Motebejane expressed gratitude to the pioneers of the chapter and wished the new committee success in shaping the chapter’s future impact.
The event was a powerful reminder that while the SBL has a rich history, its future will continue to be defined by the dedication and passion of its alumni.
