Gladys Matloga, a self-funded student at the University of South Africa, currently pursuing a Bachelor of Education in Senior Phase and FET, rose above her peers from other competing students at local universities when she was announced as one of the national winners of the 13th African Organisation for Standardisation (ARSO) Essay Competition organised by the South African Bureau of Standards.

Her academic journey has not been easy, as she had to balance her studies with financial responsibilities and personal challenges. Being a self-paying student has taught her resilience, discipline and the importance of perseverance. Despite financial difficulties, she has remained committed to achieving her dream of obtaining a qualification and making a positive contribution to the education sector.

The competition is open to university and college students under the age of 35 from African countries. Essays are submitted in either English or French and are first evaluated at national level before progressing to the continental stage. The process normally takes between four and six months. It includes stages such as launch and registration, national submissions, continental judging and the final awards announcement during ARSO events or General Assembly celebrations. Over the years, participation has continued to grow, with more than 902 students from over 20 African countries having participated in the competition from the 1st to the 12th editions.

The ARSO Continental Essay Competition aims to promote awareness of standardisation and quality across Africa while encouraging young Africans to contribute ideas to the continent’s economic and social development. The competition also seeks to develop students' research, writing and critical-thinking skills, and supports the African Union's developmental goals through youth participation.

Her motivation for entering and participating in the African Organisation for Standardisation (ARSO) Awards, which are held annually and feature different continental themes. Participating students from different universities entering the essay writing competition are encouraged to focus on standardisation of micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs), consumer protection, sustainable development and harmonised standards to promote fair trade within Africa.

Entering this competition stemmed from her passion for education, leadership and personal growth. "I wanted to challenge myself, represent Unisa with pride and demonstrate that students from disadvantaged backgrounds can also excel on the continental platform," she says. "This competition provided me with an opportunity to build confidence and inspire others who may feel limited by their circumstances."

Throughout her journey, Unisa has played an important role in supporting her academically and personally. The institution has provided access to learning resources, academic guidance and a flexible learning environment, enabling her to continue pursuing her studies while overcoming the challenges of being a self-paying student. The encouragement and opportunities offered by Unisa motivated her to work harder and believe in her abilities.

Matloga encourages students who are considering a similar path never to give up on their dreams because of financial challenges or difficult circumstances. She believes that success is not determined by one’s background, but by determination, hard work and the willingness to keep moving forward. According to her, every challenge can become an opportunity for growth. She encourages students to believe in themselves, remain focused and continue striving for excellence even when the journey seems difficult.

Receiving recognition through the ARSO Awards is a great honour for her and serves as a reminder that perseverance and dedication can lead to success. She hopes that her story will inspire other students to remain hopeful and continue working towards their goals.
