Unisa to host a public lecture in honour of JL Dube

The Unisa KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) Region, in collaboration with the College of Economic and Management Sciences (CEMS) and the Office of the Premier of KZN, is gearing up for what promises to be an exceptional public lecture dedicated to honouring the legacy of Dr John Langalibalele Dube, a towering figure in South African history. The event will take place at the Southern Sun Elangeni Hotel in Durban at 18:00 on 6 September 2024.

The theme for this year's lecture is "Community engagement and collaboration: Fostering active participation and teamwork within communities to tackle challenges and drive positive change". This theme reflects Dube's enduring focus on empowerment and collective action, underscoring the importance of active community participation in overcoming obstacles and fostering progress.

The keynote address will be delivered by Faith Khanyile, a businesswoman with over 25 years of experience in the financial services sector. Khanyile's career spans corporate and investment banking, structured finance, private equity, asset management and social impact investing. She is a founding member of WDB Investment Holdings, a leading women-owned investment company, and served as its CEO until April 2022. Her extensive involvement in women's development and empowerment in South Africa is widely recognised.

Honouring a giant such as JL Dube shows that we as Unisa are committed to recognising and celebrating individuals who have significantly shaped our nation's history," remarked Prof Nombulelo Dilotshotlhe, Chair of the JL Dube Committee.

Dube, fondly remembered as the founding president of the African National Congress (ANC) and a staunch advocate of education, continues to inspire generations with his vision of a unified and educated South Africa. The public lecture will delve into his multifaceted impact, exploring themes of leadership, education equity and social justice.

The event holds special significance for Unisa, reflecting the university's commitment to promoting intellectual discourse and honouring influential figures who have shaped the country's history. Faculty members and students alike eagerly anticipate engaging with Dube's enduring legacy, aiming to draw inspiration for contemporary challenges confronting the nation.
