Professor Kerstin Jordaan

Kerstin Jordaan is a Distinguished Professor of Mathematics in the College of Economic and Management Sciences and Acting Director of the School of Economic and Financial Sciences at the University of South Africa. She is a member of the Academy of Science of South Africa, a National Research Foundation (NRF) B-rated (internationally recognised) researcher and recipient of a Royal Society Newton Advanced Fellowship for her research in orthogonal polynomials and special functions.

She has contributed extensively to the South African mathematics community, serving as the first female President of the South African Mathematical Society and as Executive Director of the South African Mathematics Foundation, strengthening collaboration between research, education, and outreach in mathematics across the country.

Currently, Prof Jordaan serves as Council Member of the African Institute for Mathematical Sciences, Chairperson of the Steering Committee of the Department of Technology, Science and Innovation NRF Centre of Excellence in Mathematical and Statistical Sciences,  Strategy and Steering Committee member of the Institute for Mathematical Sciences and Applications, Board member of the South African Mathematics Foundation, and Chairperson of NRF Evaluation and Rating Panels. Internationally, she holds a leadership role as Programme Director for the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics Activity Group on Orthogonal Polynomials and Special Functions. Through these roles, she aims to strengthen South Africa’s mathematical sciences ecosystem, promoting research excellence and capacity development.
