The Department of Institutional Advancement’s (DIA’s) internship programme aims to transform Unisa alumni’s academic knowledge into practical experience. The programme, which commenced on 1 October 2025, not only enhances the professional skills of interns but also provides them with the opportunity to expand their professional network and improve future employability.
All interns participating in the programme hold Bachelor of Arts degrees in Communication Science, offered by the Department of Communication Science, under the College of Human Sciences at Unisa. This is what the enthusiastic interns shared about how they experience the programme thus far:
Moleboheng Mpafa
Through my degree acquired at Unisa, I developed a foundation in key areas of communication practice and strategy. I enjoy exploring ideas, particularly in analytical writing, as it challenges me to think critically and produce insightful work.
Being part of DIA’s internship programme provides an opportunity for me to gain practical experience in the communication stream and develop versatile skills under the professional guidance of experienced communicators.
My future goal is to specialise in corporate communication and take up leadership roles where I can mentor young communicators.
Victor Malatji
I obtained my Unisa qualification in 2024. My interests lie in media writing, particularly in news, digital and social media, sports, and public relations. My passion for media writing stems from its potential for strategic influence.
Participating in the internship programme will empower me with practical experience and help me to grow in a professional environment as a young communicator. I am intrigued by DIA’s role in promoting Unisa’s image and fostering meaningful connections with students, staff, alumni, and other stakeholders.
In the future, I aspire to hold a more advanced role, contributing to communication efforts that are clear, consistent, and aligned with Unisa's brand and identity.
Nontsikelelo Ndebele
Having recently obtained my qualification, my writing interests include reflective and personal writing, where I explore introspection through literary features. I employ creativity in telling my stories in an artistic and poetic manner.
Through this programme, I hope to gain practical experience in publication and broadcasting. It signifies new beginnings, and it serves as a demonstration to those around me that I can explore multiple avenues presented by my qualification.
Given my academic background in communications, I am well-positioned to enter the media and communication sector.
