Plagiarism (Turnitin)

Unisa uses Turnitin, a plagiarism detection technology, to verify student work's originality by comparing it to a variety of sources and fostering academic integrity. The software compares submitted work against an extensive database of academic texts, websites and previously submitted papers. It aids in identifying instances of potential plagiarism by highlighting similar or identical text in students’ submissions.

Turnitin is integrated into MyUnisa, there is no need to download the software separately. To comply, the students are required to accept the End User License Agreement (EULA) pop -up when submitting the assessment. Turnitin will run an originality check on the submission and issue a similarity report which can be viewed by the students. Students will only be asked once to accept the EULA. It aids in identifying instances of potential plagiarism by highlighting similar or identical text in students’ submissions.

Please take note of the following when using Turnitin:

  • Students are expected to submit typed responses for utilisation of the Turnitin software. No scanned documents and handwritten text will be accepted.
  • Students will be able to view their similarity report within 48hours after submission.
  • No report will be generated for a submission that does not comply to the required format, corrupted file and scanned documents. The system will read “Report unavailable”.
  • Not all formative assessments will require Turnitin, lecturers will communicate on those assessments requiring Turnitin.
