Student orientation attendees

The Western Cape Region hosted a First-Year Student Orientation Day on Thursday, 26 February 2026, from 09:00 to 14:00. The programme provided newly registered students with valuable information, guidance and access to essential support services to ensure a smooth transition into university life.

Motale Nkgoang, the Regional Director, warmly welcomed the students and encouraged them to take ownership of their academic journey and fully utilise the support structures available within the region. Lee-Anne Davids, the programme director, then facilitated an engaging icebreaker session, creating an interactive and welcoming environment for students.

A highlight of the orientation was the series of presentations by various regional support units. Each unit provided valuable insights into their services, which are all designed to support students academically, emotionally and administratively. Students enjoyed the following presentations:

  • Lee-Anne Davids presented the communication and marketing initiatives, outlining how students can stay informed through official communication platforms and campus updates.
  • Lonwabo Gobeni represented Student Administration Services, guiding students through key administrative processes, registration support and important procedures.
  • Zukiswa Maduna from Student Funding provided detailed information on funding processes, financial aid guidance and the importance of understanding funding requirements.
  • Mubashir Karbary's presentation on study material, student cards and study spaces explained how students can access study material and effectively use the designated study areas.
  • Jacques du Toit and Bronwyn Wright talked about the facilitation of learning (Learning Support), highlighting academic support initiatives, workshops and strategies designed to improve student performance and success.
  • Thabo Dayeni's presentation on digital learning support demonstrated how students can access computer labs, utilise Office 365 and navigate essential digital learning tools.
  • Wilhelmina Zaal and Mduduzi Ncongwane introduced Library Services to students, talking about research tools, online databases and library resources available to support their studies.
  • Dr Zamangwane Khanyile represented Counselling Services. She focused on the comprehensive support services available to Unisa students, aimed at enhancing their academic and personal development throughout their university experience while emphasising the importance of mental health, emotional well-being and the availability of professional counselling support.
  • Nwabisa Veli from ARCSWiD (support for students living with disabilities) outlined the services and accommodations available to ensure accessibility and inclusivity.
  • Richard Wright presented an overview of co-curricular activities, encouraging students to participate in activities that promote holistic development beyond academics.
  • Lindie Marais and Nicola van der Watt talked about the roles of student mentors and the Student Quality Champion, highlighting the importance of peer support and student engagement.
  • The Law Clinic was represented by Nomonde Gxilishe, the Law Clinic principal attorney. She explained the clinic's services and how students can benefit from the programmes and opportunities it offers. She emphasised the importance of applying for these programmes, noting the specific deadlines and the value of these experiences in developing the skills necessary for future legal practitioners. Vuyolwethu Musoke, a Moot Court student participant, testified to her knowledge and participation in the Law Clinic's FOCI programmes. She also shared practical insights into experiential learning opportunities.
  • Nomfundo Khumalo represented the Regional Student Representative Council (RSRC), outlining the RSRC's roles and responsibilities, as well as the support they offer to Unisa students. She emphasised the RSRC's dedication to empowering students, improving their university experience, and fostering an inclusive and supportive environment. She encouraged students to become involved in student leadership and governance structures.

The programme concluded with remarks from Dr Shahieda Jansen, who inspired students to remain focused, resilient and proactive throughout their academic journey.

Following the formal programme, students visited various stalls, including Telkom, Zone Fitness, Van Schaik, PPS, Edunova, Parow Library, Bellville Library, and PressReader, and engaged directly with the support units. They also received practical, hands-on support with myUnisa and myLife in the computer lab.

The Western Cape Region's First-Year Student Orientation Day was a great success, reflecting a strong commitment to student support, inclusivity and academic excellence. The event equipped students with the knowledge and confidence to begin their studies on a positive, empowered note.
