Attendees in a celebratory mood

On Friday, the 5th of December 2025, Unisa Radio hosted a much-anticipated year-end workshop that brought together the station staff, management, and guests for a fun-filled day of learning, reflection, and celebration.

The function was graced by the guest of honour, seasoned radio presenter Hunadi the Host, who delivered a heartfelt message reflecting on her journey in the industry and on some of her struggles in her early career in community radio.

Hunadi said, “I worked on community radio for over 7 years, and I was never compensated for it, because community radio has no money. That helped me to become the resilient, excellent presenter that I am today.

Hunadi also testified about how she moved from shows that did not match her personality until she finally settled on one that best suited who she is. Her lesson was simply that radio is centred around personality and that every interaction represents who you are as a broadcaster.

The workshop was graced by the presence of various directors from Unisa’s Department of Institutional Advancement, including its Executive Director, Professor Boitumelo Senokoane, who, in his greetings, affirmed and reassured the department’s support for Unisa radio and its plans for the station for the year 2026.

The station’s manager, Tumelo Makgoara, highlighted 2025 as a year of meaningful growth, from rising audience engagement to the most outstanding consistent programming. The station has managed to brand itself as a talk radio station and double the number of listeners with content that fits the station’s creativity and innovation.

He also outlined the impact of the strategic partnership with Tshwane TV, which elevated the collaboration of TV and radio, which has helped exponentially in expanding the reach and making the radio more accessible.

In the last quarter of the year, the station was able to extend its line-up from daytime programming into the evening, and there are plans in place to expand into the weekend.

The workshop ended on a festive note with a fun-filled Secret Santa gift exchange, laughter, a surprise performance by legendary poet Mzwakhe Mbuli, and heartfelt moments reminding everyone of the family spirit shared beyond the studio walls.

As we move into a new year of broadcasting, the workshop left the team re-energised and aligned. With inspired presenters, a united team, and renewed purpose, we step confidently into 2026 ready to elevate the storytelling and amplify new voices.
