Singer and songwriter, Siphesihle Thobelani Busani, also known as Mahostela 97, obtained his Bachelor of Education degree at Unisa on 20 October 2025 at the Durban Exhibition Centre during the spring season graduations.
While growing up, Busani’s educators were a great inspiration. As a result, he observed the career of teaching with the mindset of shaping futures and contributing to the community. When asked why he chose to pursue a Bachelor of Education degree, he noted, “Over and above simply pursuing my studies, I’ve been pursuing the bigger goal, which is to make a positive contribution to people’s lives. Education shapes lives and tomorrows, and I wanted to be part of that impactful process”.
Busani’s academic and personal journey is a remarkable example for youngsters to emulate, especially those who have to start from scratch due to a disadvantaged background. Due to the challenging circumstances of his upbringing, Busani had to work while pursuing his studies and developing his music career for his holistic vision to come true. “I worked as a security guard,” he recounts. “At times, I took my textbooks with me to work to take advantage of my lunch time; you never have enough time to study while working full-time, and you must be creative with the little time you have.”
Busani advocates for holistic success and balance in all endeavours, which he attributes to his remarkable achievements in music, academia, and ultimately being a luminary that youngsters can emulate. His hit, titled Wangenza Umuntu Ebantwini, currently has 2.2 million views on YouTube, and many of his songs are also doing well.
Busani’s blooming passion for music dates to when he was a high school student. His passion soon transcended to the realm of leadership at high school, when he became a leading artist of the Amashinga Group, whose genre was Ushameni Zulu dance.
Asked to share words of motivation as a luminary to youngsters and musically talented scholars, he said: “Both education and talent are crucial for success; I encourage all artists to achieve middle-level education and beyond, as this will help them to improve their level of thinking and perspective on planning”.
Ultimately, Busani shared that he was immensely grateful to and appreciative of Unisa and encouraged others to study at Unisa as the university shapes lives and tomorrows.
