The education of military veterans received a boost with the launch of management and leadership programme at the Unisa Graduate School of Business Leadership (SBL). Initiated by President Cyril Ramaphosa, the programme was specifically developed for members and veterans of, amongst others, the South African National Defence Force (SANDF), South African Police Service (SAPS), Metro Police and the South African Safety and Security Agency, particularly senior leaders employed as executives in their respective deployments.Read more
The Employment Equity Act (EEA) known as the ‘equality clause’ was recently amended to make more explicit the remedy for unequal pay based on discrimination. Prior to this, the act did not specifically deal with wage discrimination on the basis of race or gender, despite the Labour Court having held that there were no reasons why equal pay claims should not be claimed in terms of the Act.Read more
As the land debate cautiously manoeuvres its way towards the end goal of articulating the grounds under which there can be land expropriation without compensation in section 25 of the South Africa’s Constitution, Professor Nhlanhla Cyril Mbatha, a professor within Unisa’s Graduate School of Business Leadership (SBL), cautions that critical questions have been overlooked within the debate.Read more
In his opening statements in Budget 2019 yesterday it was clear that Finance Minister Tito Mboweni had remained loyal to President Cyril Ramaphosa’s desire to commit to five key tasks that could change South Africa’s fortunes. In an economy stifled by corruption and burdened by stubborn levels of unemployment this was never going to be easy. “Government has committed to contribute R100 billion into the Infrastructure Fund over a 10-year period and use this to leverage financing from the private sector and development finance institutions.” - President Ramaphosa President Ramaphosa reiterated in SONA 2019 the commitment to establishing his Infrastructure Fund (although seemingly at a quarter of the original amount) which will be underpinned by a new infrastructure implementation model (as yet unannounced). President Cyril Ramaphosa’s State of the Nation Address (SONA) at the Houses of Parliament had the theme, “Following up on our commitments. Making your Future Work Better.” In preparing to give the address, President Ramaphosa’s objectives would have been twofold: firstly, to appeal to business and the investment community which would be carefully listening for indications of policy consistency; and secondly, winning over South Africa’s voting public who would listening for messages of hope that a better future is within grasp.
