Prof Mketo’s research group is focusing on developing environmentally friendly methods for extraction of targeted analytes prior to spectroscopic or chromatographic determination in food, petrochemicals and/or environmental samples. The group is also exploring the used of industrial and agricultural waste to produce novel nanomaterials for adsorptive removal/degradation of pollutants and for recovery of valuable elements (REEs and PGMs) from various matrices. After the recent food poison outbreak in South Africa, the group saw the need to develop sensors for a rapid monitoring of pesticides and mycotoxins in various food samples. The research group’s main goal is to reduce environmental pollution (SDG 6), improve food safety (SDGs 1&2) and to provide clean and affordable energy (SDG 7) in the African Continent at large.
