Unisa features on Shanghai Ranking for the first time

The ShanghaiRanking Consultancy recently announced the 2017 Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU).

For the first time, institutions ranked between 501 and 800 were published as ARWU World Top 500 Candidates, and Unisa joins the prestigious ranking in this category. These universities demonstrate the potential of breaking into the Top 500 list in the near future.

“Unisa is proud of its initial showing on one of the leading international league tables,” said Siza Magubane of Strategic Partnerships. “Joining this elite group of universities is a sign of the institution’s commitment to research and academic excellence in its vision to be the African university shaping futures in the service of humanity.”

ARWU adopts six objective indicators to rank world universities, including the number of alumni and staff winning Nobel prizes and Fields medals, the number of highly cited researchers, the number of articles published in journals of Nature and Science, the number of articles indexed in Science Citation Index Expanded (SCIE) and the Social Sciences Citation Index (SSCI), and per capita performance.

Harvard University remains the number one in the world for the 15th year. Stanford continues to be the second top university. The University of Cambridge overtakes MIT and Berkeley and rises to the third best university in the world.

In South Africa, the two top ranked universities are the University of the Witwatersrand in the 201-300 band, which makes it the continental leader, and the University of Cape Town in the top 400. Universities from the United States dominate this year’s top lists with 48 Top 100 universities and 135 Top 500 universities. China has 57 Top 500 universities and the United Kingdom has 38. In total, 18 universities entered the Top 500 list for the first time.

The complete list and detailed methodologies can be found at ShanghaiRanking’s official website at http://www.ShanghaiRanking.com/.
